Maximizing the Tax Benefits of Your Charitable Contributions

Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs)

As many of our generous supporters in the United States approach or enjoy retirement, it is helpful to understand the financial tools available to maximize both philanthropic impact and potential tax benefits. If you are age 70½ or older and own a traditional (taxable) IRA, a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) can be a powerful way to support Feed the Hungry San Miguel while potentially reducing your federal tax liability.

What Is a QCD?

A QCD is a charitable contribution made directly from your IRA to a qualified charity. It is essential that the funds never pass through the donor’s hands. When properly executed, a QCD is excluded from your taxable income.

QCDs can also count toward your annual Required Minimum Distribution (RMD), which—under current tax law—must begin at age 73. By donating directly from your IRA, the amount contributed does not increase your adjusted gross income (AGI), which may help keep you in a lower tax bracket and preserve eligibility for other tax benefits.

For donors who are charitably inclined, a QCD offers several advantages over traditional cash donations:

  • Tax efficiency: Because the donated amount is not included in taxable income, a QCD can be more tax-advantageous than taking an RMD in cash and then donating those funds.
  • Simplicity: QCDs are straightforward to execute, with funds transferred directly from your IRA custodian to the charity.
  • Effective even without itemizing: This strategy is especially beneficial if you take the standard deduction, since the tax benefit is realized through income exclusion rather than an itemized deduction.

For 2026, individuals may donate up to $111,000 per year through QCDs. Married couples may each contribute up to $111,000 from their respective IRAs.

Making a Meaningful Difference

By choosing to donate through a QCD, you can increase the tax efficiency of your charitable giving while making a direct and meaningful impact. Feed the Hungry San Miguel relies on the generosity of supporters like you to continue serving children and families in need, and a QCD is one thoughtful way to align your financial planning with your philanthropic values.

Please note: QCDs must be completed in strict compliance with IRS rules, which can be complex. We strongly encourage you to consult your professional tax advisor and your IRA custodian before initiating a Qualified Charitable Distribution.

Thank you for considering this impactful way to give.
