Interns Changing Lives Through Empathy, Education, and Action

At Feed the Hungry San Miguel, our mission to fight malnutrition in vulnerable communities extends beyond the school kitchens—it reaches into classrooms, clinics, and hearts. One of the ways we foster this mission is by mentoring future professional nutritionists through our Internship Program.

This season, we are proud to welcome a group of interns who are not only learning about the realities of community nutrition but are also making a tangible difference in the lives of hundreds of children. Through daily fieldwork, health screenings, and workshops with families, these students are gaining hands-on experience while contributing to the greater good.

One of our interns, Jazmin Alvarez Garcia, shared what led her to choose Feed the Hungry:

“I identified with Feed the Hungry’s mission to improve children’s health and wellbeing in vulnerable communities. I had never worked closely in these settings before, especially with children, and I saw it as an enriching opportunity for both personal and professional growth.”

She goes on to describe the challenges and revelations of working directly with families:

“One of the biggest challenges was seeing nutritional deficiencies in so many children—many of which go unnoticed by parents and school staff. This has changed my perspective on nutrition; it’s no longer just theory—it’s about real lives, real barriers, and real impact.”

Our interns don’t just weigh and measure young bodies—they listen, observe, teach, and learn as they lead workshops throughout the communities we serve, fostering dialogue and awareness around children’s health. These moments of connection rooted in empathy, education, and action, are where change begins.

They are guided by our team of dedicated nutritionists, gaining not only technical skills but also developing deep empathy and cultural understanding. As she shared:

“Empathy, sensitivity, and the ability to connect with families matter just as much as technical knowledge. Listening and respecting the social context of each community has taught me how meaningful our work truly is.”

The Feed the Hungry Internship Program is designed to be a two-way bridge: students gain invaluable experience while our organization benefits from their fresh energy, ideas, and commitment.

To future interns, Jazmin offers this advice:

“Be proactive, stay open, and absorb everything your mentors share with you. Our work as nutritionists has the power to transform lives—never lose sight of that.”

We’re proud to support the next generation of changemakers. If you’re a student in nutrition or a related field and are passionate about community health, we invite you to be part of our journey.

Because feeding a child today means nurturing a healthier tomorrow.
