A new interactive coloring book invites children in our nutrition program to discover how healthy food fuels learning, creativity, and brighter futures.
At Feed the Hungry San Miguel, every meal we deliver tells a story. It is a story of community, compassion, and opportunity for children across San Miguel de Allende. Now that story is coming to life in a new and creative way.
We are excited to share an initiative currently in development: an interactive coloring book titled Héroes de la Cocina. This project helps children understand the power of nutrition while sharing the mission of Feed the Hungry in a way that is engaging, joyful, and accessible. This coloring book is more than an art project. It is an educational tool, a storytelling platform, and a celebration of the many people who make our work possible.
A Story That Reflects Real Impact
The book follows a simple and meaningful narrative about children discovering how nutritious food fuels their ability to learn, grow, play, and dream.
Through relatable characters and scenes from everyday school life, the story highlights how the meals provided through Feed the Hungry’s nutrition program help students concentrate in class, participate in sports, and build healthy habits for life.
Each page invites children to color, interact, and reflect on themes such as:
- Healthy food choices
- Gratitude and teamwork
- The importance of community support
- The connection between nutrition and learning
Our goal is simple but powerful. When children receive proper nutrition, they gain the strength to succeed.
From a Simple Tradition to a Creative Initiative
The inspiration for this project has roots in a tradition that began several years ago during the celebration of Three Kings Day. What started as a joyful way to celebrate children and the communities we serve gradually evolved into a creative opportunity to share our mission through storytelling.
Today, that idea has grown into Héroes de la Cocina, a project designed to inspire children while helping them understand the importance of healthy food in their daily lives.
“More than ten years ago we started a simple Three Kings Day tradition to celebrate the children we serve. Watching it grow into a creative project like Héroes de la Cocina has been incredibly meaningful. It shows how storytelling and joy can help children understand the power of good nutrition. I cannot thank our volunteers and donors enough for supporting this initiative.”
– Jonna Stratton, Volunteer Coordinator
Designed to Inspire Children
The coloring book is intentionally interactive. Children will not simply read the story; they will participate in it. Activities woven throughout the pages encourage them to:
- Color scenes from school kitchens and classrooms
- Identify healthy foods
- Think about teamwork and kindness
- Reflect on how nutritious meals help them grow stronger
For many of the students we serve, this will also be an opportunity to see their own experiences reflected in a story. When children recognize themselves in a story about health, resilience, and possibility, it reinforces the idea that their future matters.
Contest Spotlight: Celebrating Young Artists
As part of the Héroes de la Cocina initiative, Feed the Hungry will host a special coloring contest for kindergarten and elementary school students in the schools we serve. Children will be invited to color selected pages from the book and submit their artwork for judging. The contest will celebrate creativity, participation, and pride in healthy living.
Winning students will receive prizes, and their schools will also receive recognition and awards that support their classrooms and learning environments. The goal is to encourage children to engage with the story, celebrate their creativity, and remind them that they are part of a community that believes in their potential.
Why This Matters
Feed the Hungry San Miguel currently provides nutritious meals every week to nearly 5,000 children in 39 schools and community organizations across San Miguel de Allende. For many students, the meal they receive through our program is the most nutritious food they will have that day.
Héroes de la Cocina helps children understand something powerful: the meals they receive are not just food. They are fuel for learning, growing, and building a brighter future. By sharing this story through art, creativity, and play, the project reinforces healthy habits while celebrating the children and communities we serve. It also gives supporters a meaningful way to see the human impact behind the program.
Powered by Community
Like so many initiatives at Feed the Hungry, this project is the result of a community coming together. Writers, illustrators, designers, volunteers, and staff members are contributing their time and talent so that this project reflects the spirit of the children and families we serve. It is a powerful reminder that generosity can take many forms: time, creativity, and the desire to help tell an important story.
A Story Made Possible by Community
Projects like Héroes de la Cocina are possible because of a community that believes every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
When supporters invest in Feed the Hungry San Miguel, they are doing more than helping provide nutritious meals. They are helping create moments of learning, confidence, and joy for thousands of children across our community. Sometimes that impact is seen in the classroom. Sometimes it is seen in the kitchen. And sometimes it begins with something as simple as a child proudly coloring a page and realizing they are part of a story filled with possibility. Together, we continue to nourish not only growing bodies, but also growing dreams.
Looking Ahead
As development continues, we look forward to sharing updates and eventually placing this special book into the hands of the children whose lives inspire its story. Because sometimes the most powerful way to explain a mission is through the eyes of those who live it every day. And sometimes the first step toward a healthier future begins with something as simple as a box of crayons.
