A Community We Support: Tres Palmas

Background

The Feed the Hungry San Miguel kitchen in the Tres Palmas community opened in 2014. Every school day we serve lunch to 29 students of the Jose Rosas Moreno preschool (kinder) and 65 students of the children at the Ignacio Zaragoza elementary (primaria) school. Purified water is also delivered to the schools for meal preparation and consumption by students and teachers.

Location Statistics

The  Tres Palmas community is 11 kilometers from the Feed the Hungry Center. The latest census (2020) reported that there were 377 residents residing in 95 households. Thirty percent of residents were under the age of 14. Of residents 12 years of age or older, 57% were employed. Of the adult inhabitants, 10% were illiterate, and the average level of schooling was 7 years.

Nutrition Report School Year 2022-2023

During school year 2022-2023, Feed the Hungry staff nutritionists assessed 59 primaria students through height, weight, and body fat measurements.

Health Assessment Results

Among this student population, cases of severe underweight and moderate underweight are in decline. One of the challenges in this community is that children are not accustomed to eating vegetables during the meal. Thanks to our creative menus, fewer children remove the vegetables from their plates.

Some cases of overweight are the result of the erroneous  belief that a healthy child must eat excessively and have a chubby appearance, therefore, they are overfed foods like tortillas. To counter this, we continue to offer workshops to educate mothers and their children about good eating habits.
