On October 16, 2025, World Food Day, we proudly recognized Mariano Matamoros Elementary and Izcóatl Kindergarten, both in the rural community of Marroquín de Abajo, for achieving the highest nutritional status among the 39 schools in our School Meals Program during the 2024-2025 school cycle.
This distinction reflects the extraordinary dedication of teachers, school leaders, volunteer mothers who prepare meals in the school kitchens, and families who strive every day to ensure that children receive the nourishment they need to grow strong and healthy.
A Community Leading by Example
Located about 30 minutes from our Distribution Center, Marroquín de Abajo has become a powerful example of what is possible when a community works together. Throughout the year, our team of licensed nutritionists tracked student growth and overall health through weight, height, and developmental indicators. The children in this community showed the most outstanding improvement across all evaluated schools.
“This recognition is the result of daily commitment, teamwork, and the belief that every child deserves to thrive” said Feed the Hungry San Miguel trustee Jennifer Venkatraman.
Honored Guests and Community Leaders
The celebration was made even more meaningful by the presence of distinguished educators and leaders: Maestra Maritza Bianney Acuña, Secretaría de Educación Pública; Maestro Walter Ulises Alvarado de la Rosa, Principal of Mariano Matamoros Elementary; Maestra Diana Ortiz, Principal of Izcóatl Kindergarten; and Imelda Moreno, Community Educator and longtime collaborator. Their advocacy for child health and education is a cornerstone of the success in Marroquín de Abajo.
Special Recognition for Mirna Ramírez González
A highlight of the event was honoring Mirna Ramírez González, the exceptional “Cook Mom” who prepares more than 70 balanced, warm meals every school day. Her dedication and care have directly contributed to the children’s improved health and nutritional status. Her consistency, love for the children, and community leadership embody the mission and values of Feed the Hungry San Miguel.
“Mirna’s commitment is extraordinary” said Pedro Velazquez, Chef of Feed the Hungry San Miguel.
The achievements of Marroquín de Abajo reaffirm our belief in what is possible when communities unite for the wellbeing of their children. The progress of the children is not only measurable but deeply inspiring.
Congratulations to the students, teachers, parents, volunteers, and leaders of Mariano Matamoros Elementary and Izcóatl Kindergarten. Your dedication shines brightly and sets an example for communities across San Miguel de Allende.
“Nutrition changes lives. It strengthens learning, boosts confidence, and builds brighter futures.” said Maritza Bianney Acuña, from the Secretariat of Public Education.
