A Huge Thank You to Amistad Canada and Its Donors!

We are beyond grateful to Amistad Canada, a Canadian charitable organization, and its generous donors for their sponsorship of our kitchen in Ex Hacienda de Peña Blanca, located on the outskirts of San Miguel de Allende. On March 3, 2025, visitors with the Amistad Canada group visited the school and enjoyed lunch with the children.

The kitchen at Ex Hacienda de Peña Blanca opened on April 22, 2024. Every school day, 13 kindergarten children and 53 elementary school children receive a hot, healthy lunch. We also provide purified water for the children to drink and for food preparation.

The latest health assessment conducted by our nutritionists concluded that 70% of the elementary students were of normal weight. However, 72% of the kindergarteners were underweight. This is too often the case, because the children start school malnourished, but improve once they are receiving the school meals.

The high consumption of simple carbohydrates continues to be a problem. Breakfasts of sweet bread, chocolate milk, industrialized cereals, soft drinks, and coffee, and a low consumption of proteins, vitamins, and minerals result in underweight children, stunted growth, learning delays, tooth decay, and poor absorption of nutrients.

This remote community rarely has potable water. This mainly affects the oral and personal hygiene of the children, because the water consumed by the community has minerals (mainly fluoride) that directly damage the teeth. Lack of transportation options makes it difficult for this community to access healthy foods.

In elementary school, the majority of cases of poor nutrition are children in the early years: first, second, and third grades. An alarming sign is Acanthosis Nigricans, which is indicative of poor nutrition. It is accompanied by insulin resistance, and in the long term could cause Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

Amistad Canada donors also sponsor our kitchens at Puerto de Sosa, Tres Palmas, Pantoja, and Nuevo Cimatario. Thanks to their support, hundreds of children receive nutritious daily school meals, helping them grow, learn, and thrive. Amistad Canada and its donors are making a lasting impact on the health and future of these young students through our Kitchen Angel Program, which allows compassionate individuals, families, and organizations to sponsor the Hot Meals Program at a specific school, ensuring that no child has to learn on an empty stomach. With partners like Amistad Canada, we continue to fight child hunger and build a stronger, healthier community.

Connect with a Community Through School Kitchen Sponsorship

Sponsorship of a Feed the Hungry San Miguel school kitchen provides supporters with a more personal connection to where their donations go. It is also a great way to do something meaningful as a family, groups of friends, or coworkers, or to honor the memory of a loved one.

A Feed the Hungry San Miguel Kitchen Angel is an individual, family, group, or organization, that makes a three-year commitment to a particular school and community. The typical range of support is US$15,000 to $50,000 per year.

You will receive an initial report and an annual update on progress at your sponsored school and, if you like, a tour of the school, where you can meet the children who receive meals thanks to your generosity.

Kitchen Angels presently help support the meals program for fewer than half of Feed the Hungry San Miguel’s 39 school kitchens. Thousands of hungry children in impoverished communities are waiting for help. Sponsorship of a currently unsponsored school guarantees meals will be provided to the students at that location for years to come, which then enables us to extend our reach to open a new kitchen in an unserved community.
