Feed the Families Program

Feed the Families Program 2

What started as an emergency response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the “Feed the Families” program has evolved into an on-going program, because the need is still great.
Immediately after the Public Secretariat of Education announced the closing of public schools (and kitchens) in March 2020, the Feed the Hungry operations team retooled all of its activity to distribute food to the families of the children who had been receiving school meals. The children no longer receiving this critical nutrition, and their families were facing starvation due to illness and loss of income.

The program is estimated to benefit up to 20,000 people. The average monthly increase of food cost to run this operation is $100,000 USD. The special fundraising campaign runs on the Network for Good platform; all fundraising efforts are directed to support the Feed the Families program and to expand the Early Childhood Nutrition Program in 2021.

The Presidential Municipality, through the Dirección de Cultura y Tradiciones, continues to support this operation by providing trucks and drivers to help with the distribution of bags of food in 37 communities. Up until August 2020, they also provided volunteers to pack the food bags. We now support this activity with our community cooks and kitchen volunteers.

The Feed the Families program will continue until we are able to resume the school meals program—or we simply run out of funds. We remain committed to providing bags of food for as many as 4,000 families. In addition to the 37 communities and 7 local charities typically supported by Feed the Hungry, the program has expanded to reach beneficiaries of 13 other NGOs, including Casita Linda, So Others May Eat, Mujeres En Cambio, Ed Caminos. Food bags are also provided to advocates for desperately poor colonias where they have identified families in need in the urban San Miguel area.
