At Feed the Hungry San Miguel, thousands of children receive nutritious meals each school day. Behind every week\u2019s delivery of food to 39 schools and seven partner organizations across our region, there is a network of committed volunteers who ensure a full week\u2019s worth of supplies arrives safely and on time. At the heart of that operation is our Driver Coordinator, Chip Swab.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Chip\u00a0was\u00a0first brought to Feed the Hungry San Miguel\u00a0by\u00a0 Will\u00a0Brien,\u00a0who was the Driver Coordinator at that time. Will\u00a0convinced\u00a0him\u00a0to take a route, and once he\u00a0started, he did not stand on the sidelines. He stepped in.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

For two years, Chip served as a volunteer driver. He learned the routes firsthand. He navigated rural roads, early mornings, school schedules, and the beautiful unpredictability that comes with serving communities across San Miguel and its surrounding areas. He did not simply drive; he paid attention. He\u00a0observed\u00a0how timing, traffic patterns, kitchen readiness, and school coordination all intersected.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Ten years ago, he stepped into the role of Driver Coordinator.\u00a0A decade later, the impact of his leadership is felt every single week.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Each week, our drivers deliver an entire week\u2019s worth of food to every school. That means accuracy matters. Quantities must be correct. Routes must be efficient. Timing must align with kitchen capacity and school storage. Under Chip\u2019s coordination, this complex choreography unfolds with remarkable consistency.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cEach weekly delivery\u00a0represents\u00a0more than crates of food. It\u00a0represents\u00a0children ready to learn,\u201d said\u00a0Chip.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Chip is fully bilingual, a bridge between our Mexican school communities and our\u00a0largely international\u00a0volunteer base. Communication in\u00a0logistics\u00a0is everything, and his ability to move seamlessly between English and Spanish strengthens trust, clarity, and teamwork across the board.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

He is happily married to the love of his life, Lucy, whom he met in Mexico City more than 50 years ago. That enduring partnership reflects something we see in his service: commitment. Loyalty. Showing up year after year with the same steady dedication.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Chip, from Washington D.C.,\u00a0brings with\u00a0him a military background, and while he rarely speaks about it, you can see its influence in the precision of our routes and systems. Schedules are clear. Expectations are defined. Contingency plans are thoughtfully prepared.\u00a0When a driver calls in sick, when a vehicle needs servicing, or when a school has a special request, there is no panic.\u00a0There is a plan.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

His leadership was especially\u00a0evident\u00a0during the Covid-19 pandemic. When schools closed and the program quickly adapted to support families directly, Chip personally drove out to every school kitchen and community location we serve. Using Google Maps, he mapped each site and dropped a pin for every destination.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

From those efforts, Feed the Hungry created an interactive map that allowed drivers to easily navigate to every location. Volunteers could simply open the map and follow directions with confidence, knowing they were headed to the correct school or community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This tool proved invaluable. It helped coordinate not only our regular drivers and staff, but also the many volunteers who stepped forward during that\u00a0difficult time, including teams from the city\u2019s DIF and Cultura y\u00a0Tradiciones\u00a0departments. Together, they helped deliver more than 500 food bags each day to families across our community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

But what truly defines Chip is not just structure. It is\u00a0heart.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

He understands that each weekly delivery\u00a0represents\u00a0opportunity. Children who can focus\u00a0in\u00a0class instead of feeling hunger. Teachers who know their students will have\u00a0energy\u00a0to\u00a0participate. Families who can stretch limited resources just a little further.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Over the past ten years as Coordinator, Chip has helped shape a system that ensures\u00a0nearly 5,000\u00a0children receive reliable nutrition week after week. That reliability is\u00a0no\u00a0small\u00a0thing. For the children we serve, consistency means security. It means knowing that each school\u00a0day\u00a0will begin with nourishment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In many ways, Chip embodies the quiet strength that sustains organizations like Feed the Hungry San Miguel. He does not seek the spotlight. He simply ensures the work gets\u00a0done, and\u00a0done\u00a0well.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We are deeply grateful for his two years behind the wheel and his ten years guiding the fleet. We are grateful for his bilingual leadership, his military-honed\u00a0logistics\u00a0expertise, and the steady example he sets for our volunteer community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Most of all, we are grateful that he chose to say yes.\u00a0Because every week, when the\u00a0cars and\u00a0trucks roll out across San Miguel, there is a steady hand helping guide the way.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
