On October 27, 2024, Feed the Hungry San Miguel hosted an extraordinary 5th Annual Walk-Run-Bike for Food Challenge, attracting over 525 participants and 37 individual and fundraising teams<\/a>. This successful event raised enough funds to provide 100,000 hot, nutritious school lunch meals, allowing us to end the year on a high note. The challenge was part of our month-long celebration of World Food Day, declared on October 16 by the United Nations.<\/p>

The day was filled with excitement and energy, beginning at 8:30am and continuing until 1:00pm, at the beautiful grounds of our gracious host, Vi\u00f1edo Dos B\u00fahos. Runners, walkers, and bikers of all ages united in their motivation to complete their challenges and submit their pledges to help us achieve our fundraising goals. \u201cWe are incredibly grateful to the San Miguel community, our main sponsors, local restaurants and businesses, and the families from the schools who participated and generously contributed,\u201d said Mike Taylor, President of Feed the Hungry San Miguel, Inc.<\/p>

Special recognition and gifts, awarded by Rosewood San Miguel and Ca\u00f1ada de la Virgen, honored our top fundraisers: individual Don McClure, and the children\u2019s team of Mia and Joaquin Carmody Juarez. A special acknowledgment was given to our oldest and much beloved supporter,\u00a0Mr. Gerry Teldon<\/a>, who celebrated his 100th birthday this year. Mr. Teldon has participated for five consecutive years, walking for the children of San Miguel, and was honored with the G.O.A.T. (Greatest Of All Time) award. Although he could not attend the event due to illness, his award and recognition were delivered to him at home.<\/p>

Additionally, we celebrated children who have participated in this walk for five consecutive years, presenting them with trophies for their dedication and fundraising efforts. This year was particularly special, as three of these young participants, unable to be in San Miguel, chose to run while on vacation in Mazatl\u00e1n, Sinaloa. Congratulations to all the families for instilling such important values in our young participants and to all the schools represented.<\/p>

We also appreciate the participation of challengers from Quer\u00e9taro and nearby cities in Guanajuato. Mothers who participate in our School Meals program and the Early Childhood Nutrition program from La Campana, Las Cuevitas, and Alonso Ya\u00f1ez took the stage to express their sincerest gratitude for the difference our programs make in their lives and in their communities. “I thank Feed the Hungry for the food they are providing us, the support for our children in elementary school, preschool, and pre-kindergarten. Thank you very much to all the people who are contributing their part to make this become a reality,” said Angelina Campos (translated from Spanish). With the support of our donors throughout the year, Feed the Hungry is able to serve 5,000 lunch meals in our schools, communities we support, and the elderly and disabled who need this vital nutrition.<\/p>

Our event was enriched by the participation of nine local charitable organizations, which set up information booths and created opportunities to fundraise for Sofy Cares, Asociaci\u00f3n de Invidentes Santa Lucia, Ser Mujer, FAI, La Biblioteca, and the children of Casa Hogar Mexiquito. Notably, the children from\u00a0Casa Hogar Mexiquito<\/a>\u00a0not only participated but also created a fundraising page to support the very meals they receive from our outreach food program.<\/p>

We also thank Mark O\u2019Neil, President of Amistad Canada, along with the school directors and presidents of parent-teacher associations from local institutions, including Academia Internacional, Centro Educativo Naciones Unidas, Colegio Newland, Jose Vasconcelos, and Waldorf School.<\/p>

As we look ahead to 2025, we extend our heartfelt thanks to our volunteers and everyone who supported our mission to care for the well-being and nutrition of children in San Miguel de Allende.
