Background<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The Feed the Hungry San Miguel kitchen in the Moral de Puerto de Sosa community opened in 2017. During school year 2023-2024, meals are served every school day to 58 students at the General Francisco Villa primaria (elementary) school and 30 students at the Ovidio de Krolly kinder (preschool).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Location Statistics<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Moral de Puerto de Sosa is 32 <\/span>kilometers from the Feed the Hungry Center<\/span> The most recent INEGI census (2020) reported a\u00a0 population of 531 men, women, and children, residing in 126 households.\u00a0 At that time 29% of the residents were under the age of 14. Of the residents over 12 years old, 44<\/span>% were employed. <\/span>The average level of schooling completed by adults was less than 7 years, and more than 7% were illiterate.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Nutrition Report – School Year 2023-2024<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

For the latest Nutrition Report, staff nutritionists assessed 43 students in primaria and 27 students in kinder, through height, weight, and body fat measurements.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The community of Moral de Puerto de Sosa is one of the few communities in which few children are underweight, due to a stable economy. Most of the population has access to good quality food, and is helped by the school lunches provided by Feed the Hungry San Miguel.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Primaria<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

At the primaria (elementary) school, the risk of overweight has decreased as well as the number of overweight cases, but the number of cases of obesity has increased by more than 12% since the last health assessment. The clinical signs found in this population are dental caries, dry hair, hyperkeratosis, leukonychia, and in cases of obesity, abdominal distension and acanthosis nigricans. The diet outside school hours of these cases of malnutrition are usually meals high in fats, simple carbohydrates, and sugars, coupled with physical inactivity. It is important to mention that this population has a low consumption of fruits and vegetables; foods that help maintain satiety.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

When interviewed, the children maintained that they enjoyed the school lunches and they are usually satisfied for the rest of the school day.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Kinder<\/span><\/b><\/p>

At the kinder (preschool), children at normal weight increased by 10% since the previous health assessment. Overweight children or those close to overweight exhibit oral problems such as cavities, tartar, or plaque due to poor hygiene, as well as skin depigmentation and hyperkeratosis.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In addition, some of the children mentioned that their diet is low in the consumption of fruits and vegetables and natural water, which is also a factor for their weight being above normal.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We continue to offer nutrition workshops for parents, teachers, and children that can be applied in and out of school hours, with the objective of including fruits and vegetables in their regular diet to reduce the consumption of ultra-processed foods.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
