Background<\/strong><\/p>

The Feed the Hungry <\/span>San Miguel <\/span>kitchen in Los Ricos de Abajo opened in 2005. <\/span>During <\/span>school<\/span> year 2023-2024<\/span>,<\/span> we are serving<\/span> h<\/span>ot, nutritious meals to 5<\/span>3<\/span> students at the <\/span>Naciones<\/span> Unidas <\/span>primaria<\/span> (elementary) school and 1<\/span>0<\/span> students of the Helen Keller kinder (preschool), every school day.<\/span> Our hydration program also provides clean water\u202fin large refillable jugs for the children in the\u202fclassrooms and for food preparation in the school kitchen.\u202f<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Location Statistics<\/strong><\/p>

The community is <\/span>29 kilometers<\/span> from the Feed the Hungry Center. <\/span>This remote village is one of the most challenging for our volunteer drivers to access, especially during the rainy season\u2014yet they make the trip every week during the school year. <\/span>The latest census (2020) reported that the population of the community was <\/span>480<\/span> men, women, and children, <\/span>residing<\/span> in <\/span>118<\/span> households. <\/span>Only 64% of households had<\/span> indoor <\/span>toilet<\/span> or sanitary facilities. <\/span>At that time, <\/span>34<\/span>% were children <\/span>age<\/span> 14 or younger. The average school achievement for adults was <\/span>7<\/span> years; <\/span>7<\/span>% of the adult population were illiterate. <\/span>Only 45% of the adult population was employed.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Nutrition Report – School Year 2022-2023<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

For the latest Nutrition Report, staff nutritionists assessed 45 students in primaria through height, weight, and body fat measurements.<\/span><\/p>

The health assessment shows cases of both overweight and underweight, but with big improvements over the previous year. We now also record cases where the children are \u201cat risk\u201d of becoming overweight, as they are close to the range for that category.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The results suggest a trend towards problems of overweight and obesity. A higher amount is shown in the incidence of cases with risk of overweight, and a decrease in problems of obesity and underweight.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Regardless of weight, during the evaluations of the children we observed clinical signs that demonstrate a lack of vitamins <\/span>A, C, D, K, B6, and B12, <\/span>and minerals such as<\/span> iron, zinc, calcium, and phosphorus. <\/span>Long-term deficiency of these vitamins and minerals can trigger severe problems that can impact the health of children for their entire lives, so it is of utmost importance to continue to promote the consumption of foods that contain these nutrients.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
