Background<\/strong><\/p>

The Feed<\/span> the Hungry school kitchen was <\/span>established<\/span> in the La Palmilla community in 2008. <\/span>During <\/span>school<\/span> year 2023-2024<\/span>, <\/span>hot, nutritious meal<\/span>s<\/span> are served <\/span>every school day <\/span>to <\/span>21 <\/span>children at the Miguel Hidalgo preschool (kinder) and <\/span>59<\/span> children at the <\/span>Juan Jos\u00e9 de <\/span>los<\/span> Reyes Martinez elementary (<\/span>primaria<\/span>) school<\/span>.<\/span> Our hydration program also provides clean water\u202fin large refillable jugs for the children in the\u202fclassrooms and for food preparation in the school kitchen.<\/span><\/p>

Location Statistics<\/strong><\/p>

The community is <\/span>21 kilometers<\/span> from the Feed the Hungry Center. <\/span>The latest census (2020) reported that the population of the <\/span>La <\/span>Palmilla<\/span>\u00a0 community<\/span> was <\/span>383<\/span> residents<\/span>, <\/span>residing<\/span> en <\/span>102<\/span> households. <\/span>Only 24% <\/span>of homes <\/span>had piped water. <\/span>At that time, <\/span>38<\/span>% were children <\/span>age<\/span> 14 or younger. The average school achievement for adults was <\/span>less than 5<\/span> years; <\/span>19<\/span>% of the adult population were illiterate. <\/span>Of residents over 12 years of age, 43% were employed.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Nutrition Report – School Year 2022-2023<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

For the latest Nutrition Report, staff nutritionists assessed 57 primaria students through height, weight, and body fat measurements.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

La Palmilla is a community with obvious economic deficiencies, largely due to the community’s distance from central San Miguel de Allende.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We now record cases where the children are \u201cat risk\u201d of becoming overweight, as they are close to the range for that category. <\/span>The information shows us not only the risk of diseases related to overweight but also the tendency to suffer severe problems due to obesity. However, the comparison of the previous school year\u2019s data shows an improvement in cases of both overweight and underweight.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Although the comparison of the data with respect to last year shows a remarkable improvement, we continue to see signs of nutritional deficiencies. Poor eating habits cause 50% of the children to show serious oral health problems, and to show signs of insulin resistance caused by consumption of foods with excess sugar.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
