Background<\/strong><\/p>

The Feed<\/span> the Hungry kitchen in Las Ca\u00f1as has been in operation since 2004. During <\/span><\/span>school<\/span> year 2023-2024<\/span>,<\/span> we are serving<\/span> h<\/span>ot, nutritious meals to <\/span>65<\/span> students at the <\/span><\/span>Francisco Villa <\/span><\/span>primaria<\/span> (elementary) school<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Location Statistics<\/strong><\/p>

The community is <\/span>15<\/span> kilometers<\/span> from <\/span>central San Miguel de Allende<\/span>. <\/span>The latest census (2020) reported that the population of the community was <\/span>558<\/span> men, women, and children, <\/span>residing<\/span> in <\/span>1<\/span>66<\/span> households. <\/span>At that time, <\/span>34<\/span>% were children <\/span>age<\/span> 14 or younger. The average school achievement for adults was <\/span>6<\/span> years; <\/span>13<\/span>% of the adult population were illiterate. <\/span>Only 4<\/span>0<\/span>% of the adult population was employed.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Nutrition Report – School Year 2022-2023<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

For the latest Nutrition Report, staff nutritionists assessed students in primaria through height, weight, and body fat measurements.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Although the number of underweight children in the community of Las Can\u0303as was low, we must continue to help them reach optimal growth and development. Consequences of low weight were presented, such as depigmentation in the skin, pronounced dark undereye circles, and poor oral hygiene causing dental caries and pulp necrosis.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Some of the children take the school meals but do not eat the vegetables because they are not accustomed to eating them at home. We continue to develop menus that taste so good that they even eat the \u201chidden\u201d vegetables. Workshops are offered to mothers to encourage healthy eating habits at home and discourage allowing children to snack on ultra-processed foods and sugary beverages.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
