Background<\/strong><\/p>

The<\/span> Feed the Hungry kitchen <\/span>en<\/span> Los <\/span>Galvanes<\/span> opened in 2002<\/span>. <\/span>During <\/span>school<\/span> year 2023-2024,<\/span> 90<\/span> children <\/span>will <\/span>receive a healthy<\/span> lunch <\/span>every school day at<\/span> the <\/span>Carmen Ramos del Rio<\/span> kinder (<\/span>preschool<\/span>)<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>

Location Statistics<\/strong><\/p>

The <\/span>Los <\/span>Galvanes<\/span> community is <\/span>29 kilometers<\/span> from the Feed the Hungry Center. <\/span>The l<\/span>atest census (2020)<\/span> reported that<\/span> there were <\/span>1,924 <\/span>residents <\/span>residing<\/span> en <\/span>431 <\/span>households<\/span>.<\/span> Thirty-one percent <\/span>of residents <\/span>were under the age of 14. O<\/span>f residents 1<\/span>2<\/span> years of age <\/span>or<\/span> older, <\/span>44% were employed.<\/span> <\/span>Of the adult inhabitants, <\/span>6<\/span>% were illiterate<\/span>, and t<\/span>he average level of schooling was <\/span>7<\/span> years.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Nutrition Report – School Year 2022-2023<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

For the latest Nutrition Report, staff nutritionists assessed 69 students in preschool through height, weight, and body fat measurements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The percentage of children eating meals provided in Feed the Hungry\u2019s school kitchen has been increasing, as well as the consumption of fruits and vegetables, thus improving their wellbeing. <\/span>In comparison, during school year 2021-2022, 11% of the children measured were overweight, 53% were light underweight, and only 18% were at normal weight. We are encouraged by the decrease in cases of underweight, overweight, and obesity.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

While taking measurements, we observed some physical signs such as acanthosis nigricans, which is found in people with overweight and obesity. An imbalance in the regulation of certain hormones causes a pigmentation in the skin. This sign could disappear for the most part by improving eating habits and decreasing the consumption of foods rich in refined sugars.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Another notable sign we observed in more than half of the children was dental problems, with severe cavities and missing teeth due to the lack of dental hygiene and the consumption of food that generates bacteria that produces caries.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
