Annual Campaigns

Our annual Back to School (July) and Holiday Appeal (November) postal mail and online campaigns fund our core programs: School Meals and Family Nutrition Education.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many families in San Miguel de Allende abruptly lost their sources of income, and in March, schools were closed. Children who had been served meals in our school kitchens could no longer receive this critically important nutrition.

We quickly mobilized to retool operations and launched the Feed the Families Emergency Response. Now, more than 4,000 families are receiving enough healthy, shelf-stable food to feed a family of 5 for 2 weeks. The food pantries are distributed in the communities where we typically provide school lunches.

What’s Next?

At this time of the year, we would typically fundraise to welcome thousands of children back to school. We don’t know if we will be allowed to reopen the school kitchens by the time schools reopen. What we do know is that we cannot abandon these families. Therefore, we will continue our Feed the Families special emergency response program. By the end of August, we will have provided food for nearly 5 million meals to needy families during this five-month period.

At any given time, once announced by the Public Education System, we will gear up to resume the school meals program. Running these two programs simultaneously will be a logistical challenge and a heavy strain on our already tight budget. In our 35 years of operations, we have never been so challenged – and never so motivated to rise to that challenge.
